Inspections and fines for violators

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Idaho Department of Agriculture can make rules, with legislative approval, and inspect businesses to enforce these labeling rules. Violations can bring civil fines up to $500 per violation. Each improperly labeled package counts as a separate violation. The department can set extra penalties for repeat offenses by rule.

Clear labels for cell-cultivated proteins

Beginning July 1, 2026, packages with alternative animal proteins must show one of these phrases on the front: "lab-grown protein," "cell-cultivated protein," "cell-cultured protein," or "alternative animal protein." The wording must be easy to read and at least as prominent as the product name. Restaurants and vendors must give the same notice on menus or signs. Products not made from meat cannot use meat-cut terms like "steak," "roast," "tri-tip," "loin," or "brisket." The law defines alternative animal proteins to include cell-cultivated or lab-grown meat so shoppers can see what they are buying.
