Fines and inspections for label violations

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Idaho Department of Agriculture can inspect and investigate for compliance. The Department can fine up to $500 per violation, and each improperly labeled package counts as a separate violation. The Department can make rules, with legislative approval, to enforce the law and set extra penalties for repeat offenders.

No meat-cut words on non-meat

Beginning July 1, 2026, products that are not made from meat cannot use meat-cut words in labels or ads. Terms like “steak,” “roast,” “tri-tip,” “loin,” or “brisket” are not allowed for non-meat products sold in Idaho.

Sellers must label alternative animal proteins

Beginning July 1, 2026, sellers and restaurants must label alternative animal proteins. The product label must say “lab-grown protein,” “cell-cultivated protein,” “cell-cultured protein,” or “alternative animal protein.” The phrase must be on the principal display panel and at least as prominent as the product name. Menus or posted notices must show the same disclosure. The law defines “alternative animal proteins” and “meat,” which decides which products must follow these rules.
