Governor now appoints key agency directors

The Governor now appoints the directors of Fish and Game, Transportation, and Parks and Recreation. Each director serves at the Governor’s pleasure. Fish and Game: the director must have wildlife protection and management experience, work full time, and hold no other public or political party office. Transportation: the director must have transportation experience, work full time, and hold no other public or political committee office. Parks and Recreation: the director is chosen for executive ability and park experience, must be bonded if the board requires, and performs duties the board assigns. Any director appointed on or before July 1, 2026, is considered for Senate confirmation at the first regular session of the Sixty-ninth Idaho Legislature.

New rules for state appointments and vacancies

For appointed offices without a fixed term in law, the term ends when the Governor’s term ends. The Governor or other appointing authority must fill the job within 12 months. The office is vacant if no qualified person is appointed on time. It is also vacant if the Senate does not get the appointment letter by the 36th legislative day of the next session. The Senate sends each nomination to the proper committee before a full vote.
