One-year interlock rules for DUI offenders

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho requires interlocks for covered DUI offenders whose sentence or fine is partly or fully suspended. This covers convictions, guilty findings, guilty pleas, and withheld judgments, unless the exception in Idaho Code section 18-8002(12) applies. Courts must order a state-approved device on every motor vehicle the offender operates, in addition to other penalties. Offenders pay to obtain, install, use, and maintain devices; courts can approve fund help based on evidence of financial hardship. Fees are added to other fines and penalties and go into the Court Interlock Device and Electronic Monitoring Device Fund. Courts must notify Idaho's transportation department, which marks the license or restricted-driving document to allow only interlock-equipped vehicles. Vendors must send the department proof of installation; the driving restriction ends one year after that proof is provided.

Interlock vendors must report blocked starts

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho requires interlock vendors to notify prosecutors whenever the device blocks a vehicle from starting. The required alcohol calibration setting is .025. An ignition interlock is a breath-alcohol device with a camera, certified by Idaho's transportation department to prevent driving after drinking. The department must set rules for device certification, installation, repair, and removal.
