Pharmacists gain a naturopathic licensing path

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho adds pharmacists to its voluntary naturopathic doctor licensing program. Applicants need a current, valid, unrestricted pharmacist license from a U.S. state, district, or territory. Their pharmacist training must equal Idaho's licensing requirements. They also need an approved naturopathic doctoral degree and at least 160 credit hours of naturopathic doctor coursework. The school must be accredited by an agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants with a relevant guilty plea or conviction must show enough rehabilitation to earn public trust. Applicants must also meet one experience or exam pathway. These include four years practicing naturopathic health care in Idaho, or board-accepted experience of at least two years by July 1, 2024. Alternatively, applicants can pass the approved Idaho exam or a board-approved national competency exam. Applications receive individual review; licenses cannot be issued until licensing rules are finalized and approved by the legislature. License holders must display their license, including its expiration date, at their workplace. They can use the titles 'licensed naturopathic doctor' or 'licensed naturopathic practitioner.' People without this license cannot advertise themselves as licensed under this program. Idaho-licensed naturopathic medical doctors may also use the title 'licensed naturopathic doctor.'

Tighter qualifications for naturopathic committee pharmacists

Beginning July 1, 2026, the naturopathic formulary committee's pharmacist must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and an Idaho license. That member cannot also hold a license under the voluntary naturopathic licensing program. The five-member committee also includes two Idaho-licensed physicians in medicine or osteopathy who are not licensed under that program. Two members must hold licenses under the program. Every member must have a valid, active Drug Enforcement Administration registration and authority to prescribe in the United States. Initially, three members serve three-year terms and two serve two-year terms. Later terms last three years, with a limit of two consecutive terms. The committee advises on prescribing authority and must approve prescribing limits before the board approves them. The law also requires a pharmacist seat on the licensing board to exclude people licensed under the voluntary naturopathic program.
