New Idaho county rules for civil cases

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho sets new county rules for civil lawsuits. You must file where the dispute happened or where any defendant lived when the case began. If no defendant lived in Idaho when it arose or before filing, you may choose any Idaho county. For life or fire insurance suits, file where the death occurred or the loss happened. For Idaho corporations, file where the company’s main office is or where the dispute happened. Courts can still move the trial under other law. The law repeals the prior venue statute and replaces it with these rules.
