Old venue rule repealed; judges can move cases

Beginning July 1, 2026, the old venue rule is repealed. Parties follow the new venue rules instead. Courts still can move a case to a different county when other law allows.

Where you can file lawsuits

Beginning July 1, 2026, you must file in the county where the problem happened or where any defendant lived when the case began. If no defendant lives in Idaho, you can file in any Idaho county you choose. You can sue a life or fire insurer in the county where the death or loss happened.
