New immunization exemptions for college students

The law exempts some college students from showing vaccine records. You are exempt if you enrolled on or before the law’s start date, enroll less than half-time, or your coursework is only research, field work, or study outside a classroom. You can also get an exemption if a licensed doctor certifies a vaccine is medically unsafe for you. Or you (or your parent or guardian) can sign a statement objecting on religious grounds. You must give the doctor’s certificate or the signed religious statement to your college.

Tdap catch-up rules for college students

Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, colleges apply new Tdap documentation rules. If you cannot show dates for three or more doses of a diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine, you must show at least one dose dated within 10 years before the term starts. If you cannot, you must get catch-up doses of Tdap or tetanus and diphtheria using the CDC schedule until you have at least three doses, counting any prior Tdap, Td, DT, or DTP.
