6 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 4 costs, 0 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, if there is credible information your commercial permit or license was obtained by fraud, you must retake all commercial tests. You have 5 days after written notice to take the tests. If you do not appear or do not pass, your license can be cancelled.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the Secretary can, with at least 5 days’ written notice, require exams if there is good cause to question your fitness to drive. You can be told to appear and show valid ID if your license is suspected of being issued with bad documents, or to correct a license issued in error. If you refuse or fail required evaluations or reexams, your license can be suspended or cancelled. Doctors, police, State’s attorneys, judges acting officially, and immediate family can file written, named, confidential reports about unsafe medical conditions. Anonymous reports are not accepted, and the Secretary may set rules to run these reexams.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you cannot be denied a non-commercial driver’s license just because you are deaf, if you meet other rules. This protection does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the written and spoken driver tests can be given in Spanish and, on request, other languages. Sign facsimiles stay in English. The Secretary may set rules for using foreign-language interpreters. You get a test within 30 days in your county or a nearby place if you are eligible. The written test adds questions on pedestrians with disabilities, bicycle safety (like the Dutch Reach), and stopped emergency vehicles. If you miss those safety questions, the Secretary gives you the correct information.
Beginning July 1, 2026, if you are 75 or older, you must renew your license in person. If the Secretary raises the demo age by rule, people 87 or older must do a road test at renewal. Also, drivers 75 or older with a commercial license must do a road test at renewal when those rules are in place.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you must take a driver exam at least every 8 years. If you are new to Illinois or your license expired over one year, you must be examined to get or renew your license. First-time Illinois applicants must also pass a vision test.
