Licensed clinical social workers and licensed clinical professional counselors with a license expired or inactive five years or less can use a one-time faster path. If you had no disciplinary actions, the Department waives proof of fitness, out-of-state practice certification, and renewal fees for restoration.
Applicants for clinical psychology or social work can work under supervision while a license is pending. You must let the Department share your application status and show proof it received your application (for example, the application screen). This temporary OK ends if the Department finds you ineligible, finds misconduct, or issues your license.
You can apply to restore an expired or inactive social work or counselor license by filing an application, providing proof of fitness set by rule, and paying the fee. If you have active practice in another state, the Department may accept that. If you have not kept an active practice elsewhere, the Department may require a period of evaluated clinical or counseling work and may require you to pass an exam before restoring your license.
Beginning January 1, 2024, a clinical social worker must have 3,000 supervised clinical hours after a master’s, or 2,000 hours after a doctorate, pass the exam, show good moral character, and pay fees. Effective January 1, 2022, a licensed social worker must have an approved graduate degree or an approved undergraduate degree plus three years of supervised experience. If a licensed social work supervisor is not available, other appropriate disciplines may supervise as set by rule.
Licensing exams must follow federal disability laws (Section 504 and the ADA). If an exam is not offered in your primary language, the Department must provide reasonable accommodations. This makes testing more accessible for non‑English speakers and people with disabilities.
If your license expired while you were on active duty, State Militia service or training, or certain federal training before induction, you can restore it without paying renewal fees. You must apply within two years after your service ended honorably and provide proof.
Licenses cannot be denied because of race, religion, creed, national origin, politics, age, sex, sexual orientation, or physical disability. For counselor licensing, denial is also barred based on real or perceived immigration status. These rules protect applicants in licensing decisions.
The Department prints your academic degree on your license. Employers and clients can see your credential on the license itself.
The Department sets counselor license renewal dates by rule. To renew, you must finish required continuing education and pay the renewal fee. You can renew in the 60 days before your license expires by showing your education and paying the fee.
Social workers and professional counselors can place a license on inactive status by notifying the Department in writing. While inactive, you do not pay renewal fees, but you cannot practice in Illinois. To restore the license, you must pay the renewal fee and follow the Department’s steps. Practicing while lapsed or inactive can lead to discipline.
