4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.
The Department can set special harvests to manage disease or take surplus deer. These hunts are for gun or bow only and are announced by statewide news release with dates, hours, and open counties or sites. Surplus‑deer harvests can run between September 1 and February 15. If you have an unused gun deer permit from the regular season, you can use it in a separate harvest within six months at no extra cost, following the special harvest rules.
Handguns must be centerfire single‑shot or revolvers, with at least a 4‑inch barrel. Rifles must be single‑shot centerfire. Ammo must be .30 caliber or larger and a factory load that shows at least 500 foot‑pounds of muzzle energy. Bottleneck cases may not exceed 1.4 inches. Full metal jacket bullets are banned for taking deer.
The law sets the regular firearm deer season at no more than 14 days between November 1 and December 31. It also creates a 3‑day youth‑only firearm season between September 1 and October 31. The bow season runs on dates set each year between September 1 and January 31, and during that season you may only take deer with a bow. During the muzzleloading rifle season, you may only use a muzzleloading rifle or a bow. The Department sets and publishes rules, including bag and possession limits and which counties are open.
The Department ends its sharpshooting program in a county once no chronic wasting disease cases are found there for three straight calendar years. Sharpshooting can start again if the disease is found in that herd.
