In counties with chronic wasting disease, residents who own at least 20 acres can get a free landowner deer permit if they hunt only on that land. Resident tenants of 20+ acre commercial farms in those counties also get free permits for that land. Equity owners can get one free permit per 20 acres the entity owns in the county. County caps apply: up to 15 for corporate shareholders or LLC members, and 3 for partners. If you hunt off that land, you pay the normal fee; nonresidents pay a fee set by the agency.
The law gives free deer, turkey, or combo permits to Illinois residents who own at least 40 acres and hunt only on that land. Resident tenants of 40+ acre commercial farms also get free permits for that land. Equity owners of a company that owns 40+ acres can get one free permit per 40 acres in the county. Counties cap equity permits at 15 for corporate shareholders or LLC members, and 3 for partners. If you hunt off the qualifying land, you pay the normal fee; nonresidents pay a fee set by the agency. Your permit is valid on all farm land you own, lease, or rent; equity permits work on the company’s lands in that county.
The law defines who counts as a bona fide equity shareholder, member, or partner for landowner permits. You qualify if you joined at formation or bought or were gifted an interest that matches your share. You must plan to keep the interest for at least 5 years. Equity partners must be Illinois residents. These rules decide if you can claim landowner permit eligibility through a company.
