The Illinois Department of Public Health runs the drug reuse program. It lists participating pharmacies on its website and teaches pharmacies how to join. It posts educational materials and collects information from participants. It sends a report to the General Assembly each year by December 31, starting in 2026.
If your pharmacy dispenses drugs through the program, you must tell the Illinois Department of Public Health. You must report program data in the format the Department sets. The law does not list the data fields or the reporting schedule.
Donors and recipients must keep required records for six years, on paper or electronically, on site or with a third party. You may use an ID like a barcode if full details are easy to pull and you replace the ID with the original info when regulators ask; never use IDs on patient labels. If you process donated drugs for any credit or take part in program actions, you are a returns processor and must follow federal nonsalable-return record rules. The Department can request these records. These rules have been in effect since January 1, 2022.
