EMS chiefs may use emergency lights

An EMS chief’s vehicle with EMS chief plates can use red or white flashing or rotating lights. The driver must complete an emergency vehicle operation course recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health, and lights may be used only for real medical emergencies. EMS chiefs may also use blue lights, but the user must carry ID or a letter with the organization’s name, their position, their term of service, and a contact to verify. Blue lights may be lit only when responding to a real emergency or when parked at a fire, rescue, ambulance call, or crash scene. EMS chief vehicles may have a siren, whistle, or bell audible from 500 feet, used only during an emergency response or in immediate pursuit of a violator.

Special plates for EMS chiefs in 2027

Beginning with the 2027 registration year, EMS chiefs for a city, town, or fire protection district can get special EMS chief plates. Plates can go on passenger cars or on vehicles up to 8,000 pounds owned by the chief, the city, or the district. The fee for a chief’s own vehicle is the standard first‑division passenger‑vehicle fee. City or district EMS vehicles can get a permanent plate for a one‑time $8 fee. These plates follow the multiyear renewal schedule. If the holder leaves the EMS chief role, they must return the plate right away unless it is a permanent plate. Vehicles with EMS chief plates are exempt from the general plate rules in Section 3-600(a).
