New PFAS rules for firefighting gear

Starting January 1, 2026, sellers must give a written notice when firefighting protective clothing contains PFAS, explaining why PFAS were added. Sellers and buyers must keep the notice for at least 3 years, and the seller must provide it to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency within 60 days if asked. Beginning January 1, 2027, it is illegal to make, sell, or distribute firefighting protective clothing with intentionally added PFAS in Illinois. Beginning January 1, 2030, the same ban covers auxiliary gear, like breathing equipment, hearing protection, protective communications, and fall-protection devices. These rules apply to sales to any person, local government, or State agency.
