Illinois provides a scholarship for spouses and children of certain veterans or service members. The veteran must be missing or a POW, have died from a service‑connected disability, or be permanently 100% disabled from service. The veteran must also meet one Illinois residency test set in the law. The award covers up to four calendar years of full‑time study, including summers, at a state university or public community college. Full‑time is 12 or more credit hours per term; part‑time awards are prorated. You must meet your school’s academic and grade rules.
The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs runs the program and decides who qualifies. The state pays colleges through the Comptroller on vouchers the Department approves. For eligible children, money up to the law’s stated maximum is paid to the child, or to the veteran parent or a guardian if the child is a minor. The Department must check the child’s school attendance and set rules for paying minors.
