New safety signs at trail crossings

The law requires permanent warning or regulatory signs where paved bicycle trails cross highways. This does not apply if the crossing already has an official traffic control device or sign. For drivers, the State and local road agencies must post advance warning signs at least 150 feet before crossings. These signs must follow the State manual and are not needed if the approach already has an official device. When trail managers know of a hazard, they must post temporary warnings like cones, barricades, drums, or paint.

Which bicycle trails these rules cover

The law defines a paved bicycle trail by its surface. It includes aggregate, asphalt, bituminous treatment, concrete, crushed limestone, or any mix of these. The trail signage rules do not cover rustic or primitive trails.
