Statewide hotline for domestic violence help

The Department of Human Services provides one statewide phone number for domestic violence help. You can call to get information and referrals to services. Victims, friends or family, people seeking help, and first responders can all use it. DHS runs and maintains the hotline.

Strong rules for running the hotline

DHS can choose one Illinois 501(c)(3) lead group and sign a contract to run the hotline, and it must show an independent audit when applying. The lead group must offer toll-free, statewide, confidential referrals 24/7, in multiple languages, with no callback required. All direct staff and volunteers get 40 hours of domestic violence training; anyone trained after July 1, 2004 trains at a state-approved site. It must link callers by three-way phone to DHS-funded providers, provide tech for deaf and hard-of-hearing callers, and staff to help remote and non-English callers. The group collects statewide service-need data, files program and money reports to DHS, and DHS checks its capacity before awarding the contract; any public or private funding sources may support the hotline.
