Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, to get a public high school diploma, you must file the FAFSA or state aid form, or sign a waiver. If you are 18 or legally emancipated, you file or waive yourself. Starting in 2025-2026, your district must teach about and help complete the application, including time during the school day. Districts can get free support from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission; using help is your choice. If extenuating circumstances prevent filing and you met all other requirements, the school must still award your diploma after the principal attests the district tried to help. The State Board of Education can set rules to carry this out.
