Vet bill help for retired police dogs

Illinois creates a program at the University of Illinois to help pay vet bills for retired police dogs. A selected nonprofit runs it and may use up to 10% of yearly funds for administration. Former handlers or adopters qualify if the dog served 5+ years with one agency, 5+ years total across agencies, or 3+ years and retired because of a duty injury. You must submit a paid invoice from an Illinois veterinarian. Grants pay up to $1,500 per dog each year, with no carryover, and only while yearly funds remain. The Board of Trustees sets rules to run the program.

Police K-9 memorial plates and fees

The Secretary of State issues Illinois Police K-9 Memorial plates for cars, motorcycles, and vehicles under 8,000 pounds. You pay $40 extra at first and $27 extra at each renewal, in addition to your registration fee. Of those fees, $15/$2 go to the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund and $25/$25 go to the Illinois Police K-9 Memorial Fund. If 2,000 applications are not received by January 1, 2028, the state stops issuing the plate after that date.
