The Department and Board can hold hearings and reprimand, suspend, revoke, or refuse to issue or renew certified veterinary technician certificates. Certified veterinary technicians must complete continuing education set by rule to renew their certificate. These rules have been in effect since December 31, 2003 and remain until January 1, 2029.
Veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians must display their license, or a copy, in a clear place at their main office and anywhere they provide services. The license number must be visible. This rule is now law in Illinois.
Beginning January 1, 2024, only people certified by the Department may use the titles "certified veterinary technician", "veterinary technician", "vet tech", or "technician", or the initials "CVT" or "VT". Using these titles without certification, or a certified technician performing work contrary to the Act, is a Class A misdemeanor and can lead to loss of the certificate. The penalties have been in force since December 31, 2003. All of these rules remain in effect until January 1, 2029.
Starting January 1, 2024, veterinary practice includes telemedicine, phone or electronic advice, and complementary or alternative therapies. A valid vet‑client‑patient relationship needs recent in‑person exams, timely on‑site visits, or access to patient records from a prior relationship. The veterinarian must be available for follow‑up or name another vet with access to the records. A relationship based only on phone or electronic contacts does not count. These rules apply through January 1, 2029.
