New police tax for unincorporated areas

In counties with 1,000,000 or more people, township voters can let the board contract with nearby cities or the county for police in unincorporated areas. The board can declare those areas a special police district for taxes. The county clerk then adds a yearly property tax for that district, up to 0.10% of taxable value. The tax funds police protection and other public safety uses allowed by the law. You may get more local police service, and property owners in the district may pay this added tax.

Rules for spending police levy money

The township can use the special police levy for public safety in unincorporated areas. Examples include public information campaigns, traffic safety and signs, anti‑gang and anti‑violence programs, and graffiti cleanup. The law bans using this money for any school resource officer wages or to hire them. It also bans spending on red light cameras, speed cameras, and automated license plate readers.
