The law lets a pharmacist or pharmacy pick up your prescription from your prescriber at your request. They can deliver your medicine to you or your agent by an employee, a common carrier, or U.S. mail. Delivery can be to your home, work, hospital, or care facility, including to authorized hospice or home health staff. You or your agent can also drop off prescriptions at a designated area. This authority ends on January 1, 2028.
If you hold a temporary professional license, you can order, give, and prescribe controlled drugs when you act within your license. You must follow rules under the Act.
Anyone in Illinois who makes, distributes, dispenses, analyzes, researches, teaches with, or detects controlled drugs must register with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. This also covers buying, storing, or giving euthanasia drugs and canine odor detection services. You must get a separate registration for each location where these activities happen. The Department sets expiration dates and renewal periods, which add paperwork and fees.
