Online test results and QR labels for baby food

Beginning January 1, 2027, manufacturers must post baby food test results on their websites. For each product and batch, the post must list each toxic element’s name and level, plus the product name, UPC, size, and lot or batch numbers. The info must stay online for the product’s shelf life plus one month. If a product is tested for a toxic element with an FDA action level, the label must tell shoppers to scan a QR code and include a code linking to the test results and an FDA page on children’s health effects. The Illinois Department of Public Health also runs a system for consumers to report baby food problems.

Stricter safety testing for baby food

The law bans selling or making baby food in Illinois that does not meet these safety rules. Manufacturers must test a representative sample from each production batch at least once per month for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Tests must be done by an ISO/IEC 17025:2017–accredited lab using FDA-standard methods, with proven accuracy. Manufacturers must give test results to the Illinois Department of Public Health when asked. These steps help keep products safer for babies and give officials a way to check compliance.
