Prenatal care now includes two syphilis tests

If you are pregnant in Illinois, your provider tests your blood for syphilis at your first prenatal visit and again between 27 and 32 weeks. Providers must send samples to a lab approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health. If the first test is positive or doubtful, your provider must order more tests. State or local public health labs run the test for free for residents when your provider asks. You may refuse testing for religious reasons. Birth or stillbirth certificates must show whether you were tested, the date of the specimen, and the lab name, but not your result.
