Stronger privacy rules for student records

Starting July 1, 2026, schools may share student records only for the reasons the law lists. Anyone who gets the information cannot share it again without your written consent. Schools must log each release, showing what was shared, who got it, why, the date, and any consent. Only you and the records custodian can see this log.

What schools keep in student records

Starting July 1, 2026, the Student Permanent Record holds basics like name, birth date, address, grades, and attendance. If your child received special education, a summary of performance is private and only disclosed as the law allows. You can agree in writing to leave that summary out, but only after written notice that districts keep special education records for five years and removal may affect future State or federal benefits. The Student Temporary Record holds other items, like family background, test and psychological results, teacher evaluations, service logs, and child‑abuse reporting information. It must also note serious discipline that led to suspension or expulsion; serious means drugs, weapons, or bodily harm.

Schools may publish student directories

Starting July 1, 2026, schools may publish student directories with names, addresses, and other identifying details if they follow State Board rules. This can help school activities and outreach. It may reduce privacy for some families.
