Beginning January 1, 2025, Illinois offers a United Nations Protection Force special license plate. You must live in Illinois and have served in the UN Protection Force in Yugoslavia, Somalia, Panama, or Grenada. Plates can go on passenger cars, motorcycles, autocycles, and second-division vehicles up to 8,000 pounds. Plates renew on the state’s staggered multi-year schedule. The Secretary of State sets the look, may allow vanity or personalized versions, and approves any decals. The plate does not have to say “Land of Lincoln.”
Starting January 1, 2025, getting a new UN Protection Force plate costs $15 extra on top of the normal registration fee. Each registration renewal period adds $2 extra. These fees go to the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund. You still pay all regular registration charges.
