Insurers must plan nonopioid pain options

Beginning January 1, 2027, health insurers in Illinois must create a pain management coverage plan. The plan must ensure adequate coverage and access to nonopioid, nonnarcotic medicines and non-medication therapies. Insurers must follow Department of Insurance guidelines. They must file the plan with the Department and post details on a public website. This makes nonopioid options easier to find and use.

Medicaid protects nonopioid pain drugs

Illinois Medicaid must not treat FDA-approved nonopioid pain drugs on its Preferred Drug List worse than opioids for acute pain. The rule applies only to drugs on the list that are approved to treat or manage pain. This protects coverage and access to nonopioid options for members. The Department still manages the list under state and federal rules.

State posts nonopioid pain pamphlet

The Department of Public Health can publish an online pamphlet about nonopioid ways to treat pain. It explains FDA-approved nonopioid drugs and non-drug therapies, with pros and cons. People and providers can read it on the Department's website. This is information only and does not change coverage or payments.
