Starting January 1, 2025, Illinois honors out‑of‑state disability plates and parking devices that show the International Symbol of Access. Non‑residents with those plates or devices get the same parking rights in Illinois. The Secretary of State can also make agreements so Illinois disability plates and devices are honored in other places.
Starting January 1, 2025, qualifying people with disabilities can get special license plates for cars, motorcycles, autocycles, and vehicles up to 8,000 pounds. You must pay normal registration fees and not be disqualified from getting a driver’s license. You can show a medical statement or an Illinois disability ID (Class 1A, 2A, or Type Four) as proof. A parent or legal guardian may get plates for one family vehicle if the disabled person has no vehicle in their name and often rides with them. One extra set may be approved with a written reason. Optometrists can certify Class 2A visual disabilities. You can also get a parking decal even without a driver’s license or registered vehicle, using the same proof. You may ask to personalize your special plates.
Starting January 1, 2025, organizations that transport people with disabilities can get disability plates or parking decals. This includes corporations, LLCs, school districts, nursing and convalescent homes, and state or city agencies. The Secretary of State sets how groups are certified and re‑certified and chooses which disability emblem goes on the vehicle.
Starting January 1, 2025, the Secretary of State sets rules to check and re‑check non‑permanent disabilities. Temporary plates or decals last only as long as the medical certifier says, up to 6 months. If you still qualify after that, you must get recertified. For permanent disabilities, you must submit a new medical statement every 5 years. These rules mean more frequent renewals and paperwork for many applicants.
