Beginning January 1, 2022, the law creates a course and certification for therapy dog teams. These teams pair an officer with a trained therapy dog for crisis and emergency response. The program sets training and certification standards. The goal is to have teams across regions and ready for dispatch during crises.
Beginning January 1, 2022, the law requires a standard Crisis Intervention Team curriculum for police. It includes a 40-hour specialty course on mental‑health crises. Training teaches officers to spot symptoms, use verbal de‑escalation, and connect people to care. Programs must include family voices, mental health laws and resources, and role‑play practice. Officers who finish get a certificate. The Board also provides an introductory course on system history, diagnoses, treatments, medications, and safe interactions, which can be taken online.
