From August 4, 2023 through August 31, 2025, Illinois does not require the teacher performance assessment. The requirement returns on September 1, 2025. During the pause, programs cannot require video submissions for the assessment. If you hold a Professional Educator License and work at least one school year in a Tier 1 district, you can apply to the State Board for a refund of your assessment costs. Refunds are paid only if the state funds them.
The State Superintendent can name regional education offices or service centers as official learning partners to help schools identified for improvement. The Superintendent can revoke a designation at any time.
To get an Illinois educator license, you must pass state exams and a content test for each endorsement that has a test. Short‑term school support approvals do not need the content test before the approval is issued. The State Board sets passing scores, gives exams at least three times a year, can score and let you retake sections, and sets fees, accommodations, and how long scores last. For bilingual roles, the Board tests speaking, reading, writing, and grammar in English and in the requested program language. By July 1, 2026, the elementary (grades 1–6) test adds bilingualism, biliteracy, oral language development, and key literacy skills; the Board sets a formal passing subscore and publishes program‑level pass counts. All tests and scoring are designed to be racially neutral.
If you seek a paraprofessional endorsement on an Educator License with Stipulations, you can qualify by passing the state paraprofessional competency test and meeting the other listed rules. You do not need the college‑level coursework for that endorsement if you pass the test. The State Board sets the test rules.
