The law sets phased high school course requirements tied to the year a student starts 9th grade. For students entering through 2023–24: four years of language arts; two years of writing‑intensive (one in English); three years of math including Algebra I and geometry content; two years of science; two years of social studies with U.S. history and civics; and one year from art, music, foreign language (ASL allowed), vocational, or forensic speech. Students who started in 2022–23 or 2023–24 also need one year of intensive computer literacy. For students entering in 2024–25 and later: add one year of computer literacy and require two years of laboratory science. For students entering in 2028–29 and later: two years of a foreign language are required, and ASL counts.
The law creates a grant program for agriculture education. Grants can pay for up to 60 extra days (400 hours) of a teacher’s work. Normally, the grant covers up to 50% of the added pay. For new agriculture programs, it covers up to 100% in years 1–2 and up to 80% in years 3–4. Districts must base extra pay on the teacher’s regular-duty rate. The State Board runs the program, sets rules, and provides a system to track hours. Funding depends on money the state sets aside each year.
If a district offers AP Computer Science, it counts as a math‑based course and must show on the transcript as meeting math needs. Students with an IEP that sets their course of study are exempt from the listed course requirements. Several older 9th‑grade entry groups are also exempt from newer rules; check the student’s entry year. During a Governor‑declared public health disaster, the State Board may adjust graduation rules for grades 9–12.
