Beginning January 1, 2025, most vehicles must show two plates: one in front and one in back. Motorcycles, autocycles, trailers, semitrailers, and apportioned buses show only a rear plate. Truck‑tractors and apportioned trucks show only a front plate. Plates must be secure, horizontal, easy to read, and at least 5 inches off the ground; motorcycles may mount vertically if clearly visible. Put renewal stickers on the upper right corner of the rear plate (front for truck‑tractors), unless the Secretary allows another spot. If a truck has a camper body, put the camper’s plate on the rear of the camper. A drive‑away permit must be attached exactly as the Secretary of State prescribes, or it is void.
Beginning January 1, 2025, you must not use a cover over a plate or digital plate. You must not attach unapproved items or use any manual, electronic, or mechanical device to hide or alter registration. You also must not change the factory rear plate mount to block the plate. Using devices or altered evidence can bring tickets, and changing the mount to hide the plate is a Class A misdemeanor.
Beginning January 1, 2025, you may not drive a vehicle after its Illinois registration period ends. This covers plates, digital plates, and registration stickers, including dates set under Sections 3‑414 and 3‑414.1. Driving with expired registration is unlawful and can bring enforcement.
Beginning January 1, 2025, businesses may not sell or advertise license plate or digital plate covers. Doing so is a business offense and can bring penalties.
Beginning January 1, 2025, foreign‑registered fleet vehicles prorated with Illinois must show the Illinois prorate decal on the frontmost plate. Display it the same way as an Illinois registration plate. This applies to fleet operators.
