From August 4, 2023 through August 31, 2025, teacher candidates do not need to pass a teacher performance assessment. The requirement resumes on September 1, 2025. If you hold a Professional Educator License and work at least one year in a Tier 1 district, you can apply for a refund of teacher performance assessment costs, if funds are appropriated. A state Task Force studied these assessments and reported by October 31, 2024.
You can earn a paraprofessional endorsement by passing the State’s paraprofessional competency test. You must also meet the other legal requirements, but you do not need the college coursework.
By July 1, 2026, the State Board encourages districts to collect and share teaching resources for American Sign Language in K–8. Resources can explain why early ASL helps, how to add it to classes, and how to run ASL programs.
Schools must teach an age‑appropriate internet safety lesson each year in grades 3–12. The State Board posts online safety materials for schools and families. Lessons can cover privacy, cyberbullying, fraud, and spotting AI‑made fake images or videos. Schools or curriculum developers can ask the Attorney General to review their materials.
The State Board develops statewide guidance on using AI in K–12 and posts it by July 1, 2026. It covers basic AI ideas, privacy and bias risks, student data laws, and supports for English learners and students with disabilities. The Superintendent may form a diverse state council with AI experts and at least two current teachers to advise this work. The guidance is updated over time.
All license applicants must pass a content test for each endorsement. Tests are racially neutral, with passing scores set by the State Board, and are offered at least three times a year. For bilingual and English learner endorsements, the Board assesses speaking, reading, writing, and grammar in English and in the requested program language. By July 1, 2026, the elementary (grades 1–6) test adds bilingualism, biliteracy, and literacy skills and gives a language and literacy subscore; candidates do not have to pass that subscore. By July 1, 2026, the Board posts how it checks tests for validity and bias, how it picks committee members, and summaries of related meetings.
