Break the park‑zone speed or stop rule and you face a petty offense. The first offense has a minimum $250 fine. A second or later offense has a minimum $500 fine. These fines apply when children are within 50 feet on a designated and signed park‑zone street. This has been in effect since January 1, 2023.
Local governments may install rapid‑flashing beacons at the ends of crosswalks next to elementary or secondary schools. The lights turn on when a pedestrian activates them and alert drivers to people in the crosswalk.
The state transportation department must design standard park‑zone signs within six months of January 1, 2023. The designs are free to local governments and sign makers, except for copying and postage costs.
Beginning January 1, 2023, you must drive 20 mph or less on a posted park‑zone street when children are within 50 feet. You must make a full stop at stop signs and red lights in park zones, including before right turns. These rules apply only where park‑zone warning and speed signs are posted. If a street had a speed limit under 20 mph before this law, that lower limit still applies in the park zone.
