Beginning January 1, 2026, Illinois offers cycle rider safety courses statewide through Regional Training Centers. Classes are open to residents with a valid driver’s license who are at least 16 on the first day. Courses can be for credit or noncredit and are open even if you are not enrolled at the school. Providers can charge only a small registration fee set by the Department, and it is refunded when you finish. Courses must meet state rules and national standards, and the Department approves or denies a submitted course within 60 days.
Beginning January 1, 2026, contracted training providers cannot set rules about how employees dress outside work hours. They also cannot ask about off‑duty dress on job applications or in interviews.
Beginning January 1, 2026, the Department solicits and contracts with cycle safety training providers. Eligible providers include colleges, universities, and government or business entities in good standing; motorcycle dealers and sellers are excluded. Contracts use the Cycle Rider Safety Training Fund and are awarded based on need, cost, and capacity, as funds allow. Payment equals the per‑student rate times students present on day one, plus reimbursement for maintenance and approved non‑personnel costs. Providers must use qualified instructors, do annual quality checks, keep liability insurance, and follow Department rules and deadlines.
