Beginning Jan 1, 2025, the state runs a grant program to restore forests, wetlands, and prairies and grow native plants that absorb carbon. State and local governments, forest preserves, park districts, conservation land trusts, and conservation nonprofits can apply. Grants can pay for matching funds, planting near roads, parks, and preserves, and care of urban forests, including removing invasive plants. They can also fund regional planting and burn teams, public education, and shoreline restoration for counties and park districts. The Department sets application rules and timelines, and the program runs when the state appropriates money.
Beginning Jan 1, 2025, at least 75% of program dollars must be awarded to eligible recipients. The Department may use up to 23% for its own restoration work under the program. It may use up to 2% for administration.
