Out-of-state licenses count for instructors

You can qualify as a Kansas driving school instructor with a valid driver’s license from any state. Motorcycle instructors can use a valid Class M or equivalent motorcycle license from another state. All other instructor requirements still apply.

New rules for Kansas driving instructors

To qualify as a Kansas driving school instructor, you must meet one of three paths. Show college driver‑education credit, a state board driver‑ed teaching credential, or 30 classroom hours plus 24 behind‑the‑wheel hours under a state‑licensed instructor with at least three years of active instruction. You must know the Kansas Operation Lifesaver railroad‑crossing safety program. You must be physically able to drive and train others, and provide a medical doctor’s certificate stating you are physically and mentally able to drive safely. You also pay a $5 application fee. These rules replace the prior instructor statute.
