Plates can ship straight to you

Plate makers must ship most plates to county treasurers. For online or digital orders, plates can be shipped directly to you. State corporation commission tags go straight to the commission. The law also repeals older plate statutes to update and consolidate the rules.

Simpler proof for military plates

The law makes it easier to prove you qualify for military plates. You can show a DD214, DD Form 2 (Retired), NGB Form 22, or a Kansas license with the veteran mark. Apply on the state form at least 60 days before renewal. If you do not file the renewal form, you must return the plates to the county treasurer.

New specialty plates with yearly fees

Beginning January 1, 2026, Kansas offers new FFA, Route 66, and blackout plates. FFA and Route 66 plates are for cars and light trucks up to 20,000 pounds. You pay the normal tag fee plus an annual logo royalty set by the group, between $25 and $100, to the county treasurer. You must allow limited record sharing with the group and the state treasurer. Blackout plates cost an extra $50 each year and can be personalized for the usual personalized fee. County treasurers send blackout fees to the new license plate replacement fund. These plates are nontransferable, renew each year, and you must return the plate if you do not pay the fee or royalty.

Personalized plate rules and $40 fee

The law limits personalized plates to one per owner or lessee. You pay a $40 fee once during the registration period when the plate is issued. Car and truck plates can have up to seven characters; motorcycles get up to five. The director can deny rude or duplicate choices. Apply on the state form at least 60 days before your renewal. The plate is displayed on the rear, and the fee goes to the state highway fund.
