County leaders can set higher countywide sales tax rates in four counties. Pawnee can add up to 1.0 percentage point. Seward can add 0.5 points. Finney can add 0.3 points. Jackson can add 0.25 points. If adopted, you pay more sales tax on taxable purchases made in that county.
Finney and Ford county boards can put a 0.25% countywide sales tax for highway projects on the ballot. If voters approve, shoppers pay 0.25% more until all project costs are paid. Any leftover money goes to the county road and bridge fund.
Starting July 1, 2024, sellers of custom meat processing do not need an exemption certificate when the buyer claims this specific tax break. If a seller reasonably believes the service qualifies, the seller does not collect or send in the tax. A buyer who wrongly claims the exemption still owes the tax.
The state keeps the current split of countywide sales-tax money for a set time. One-half of the tax keeps using last year’s property tax levies to divide money among the county and cities. That rule stays unchanged from July 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. This affects local budgets, not your personal tax filing.
The law repeals K.S.A. 79-3651 and K.S.A. 2024 Supp. 12-187, 12-189, and 12-192. These old local sales tax rules are removed and replaced by the new framework in this law. This is a legal cleanup and does not change your filing by itself.
