Each year, school boards must count how many students at each school qualify for free meals. Boards can help families complete forms to make counts accurate. If a school or district qualifies for the Community Eligibility program, the board must consider joining. If the board votes yes, the superintendent must take the steps to join. The state education department must help eligible districts apply so more schools can offer free meals to all students.
If joining the Community Eligibility program would hurt district finances, the board can opt out. The board must show the hardship in a public meeting and vote by majority. If they opt out, your school may not offer free meals to all students.
