County can disband fire districts

The county board can end a fire district any time after four years from when it was first organized, if a petition is filed and the board issues an order. The board can also end a district that has no land left, by motion and order. The law also removes the prior statute section tied to these rules.

Petition to change fire district boundaries

Landowners can ask to add or remove land from a fire district. The petition must be signed by owners of at least 10% of the area of the land to be added or removed. If the board finds it sufficient, it must publish a resolution once a week for two weeks with a map. You have 30 days after the last notice to file a protest. If owners of more than 19% of that area protest, the change does not take effect. If no valid protest is filed, the change is final and the board declares the new boundary.
