Kansas lets qualified athletic trainers from other states or countries get a license without an exam. You must show the other license or exam meets Kansas standards, have no pending discipline, and pay the fee. The Board can also issue a temporary permit if you meet all rules or all except the exam. The temporary permit lasts six months or until the Board acts, and you can get only one.
To be licensed as an athletic trainer, you must graduate from an accredited, board‑approved athletic training program and pass a board‑approved exam. Before you perform athletic training duties, you must file a practice protocol with the Board. Each licensed healing arts practitioner who will delegate tasks to you must sign it. The protocol must meet Board rules.
The law clarifies what counts as athletic training, including prevention, evaluation, emergency care, rehab, wellness, referrals, research, and public education. Only people licensed under this law may use the title “athletic trainer.” This helps trainers and employers know what work is allowed.
An athletic trainer licensed in another state or country can treat a visiting team in Kansas without a Kansas license. Care must be limited to members of that traveling team or organization. The exemption applies only while serving that team.
