You pay a $5 service fee when you apply to register or renew a vehicle. Counties can also add a transaction fee. It can be up to $2.50 in counties with one registration office, or up to $5 where there are multiple offices. From Jan 1, 2027 through Dec 31, 2029, counties may raise that transaction fee above $5, up to $10, if the treasurer recommends it and the county board approves by Oct 1 for the next year. Approved increases start Jan 1 and last the full calendar year. On and after Jan 1, 2030, the transaction fee cannot be more than $5. The money goes into the county special fund for vehicle services. The Kansas County Treasurers Association must report on these fees by Jan 10, 2028.
The law repeals K.S.A. 8-145d and K.S.A. 2025 Supp. 8-145. These sections covered parts of vehicle registration fees and the county treasurer’s special fund. Their repeal updates how the state sets and distributes these fees. This change does not set new amounts by itself. Any budget effects depend on other laws now in place.
