If you study at an eligible public college, the scholarship covers tuition, required fees, and books, minus other aid. At eligible private colleges, it uses the same math but cannot be more than the average cost for the same program at public schools. “Aid” that lowers your award includes grants and scholarships, but not military education benefits or 529 college savings. You can use up to 68 funded credit hours or $20,000 total, whichever comes first. It does not pay for prerequisites unless they are part of the program, or for remedial classes unless taught as corequisites. Awards depend on available funding.
The program’s yearly funding is capped at $15 million statewide. Colleges must request reimbursement by Sep 1, Dec 1, Mar 1, and Jun 1. The state board pays colleges on Sep 15, Dec 15, Mar 15, and Jun 15 based on reported awards.
Your family income must be $100,000 or less for a family of one or two, $150,000 for three, and $150,000 plus $4,800 for each extra person. You can use the scholarship at eligible colleges: community or technical colleges with a service area, Washburn Institute of Technology, Kansas non‑profit colleges with open enrollment and national accreditation, and Kansas main‑campus schools recognized by the state board and eligible for federal Title IV aid. Programs must be two‑year degrees or career/technical certificates or stand‑alone programs the board approves that are high‑wage, high‑demand, or critical‑need, and are named by the board or the school. A part‑time student takes six or more credit hours in a term and is not full‑time. The law uses the state’s existing definition of “military servicemember” and replaces the prior scholarship statutes.
