Law enforcement memorial committee and funding

The law sets an 11-member advisory committee for the state law enforcement memorial. Seats go to named police and sheriff groups and to state officials or their designees. Each group may send at least three nominees for the governor to consider for the appointed seats. The committee advises the director of architectural services and the state historical society on the Capitol memorial and can recommend remembrance activities. It may raise private money and must send all funds to the state treasurer for the Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. Members elect a chair and vice chair each year, meet at least once a year, and the historical society’s secretary is the committee’s secretary. Governor-appointed members serve at the governor’s pleasure. The act repeals the prior memorial statute and replaces it with these rules.

State help for line of duty funerals

When a Kansas law enforcement agency asks the memorial committee, the Kansas Highway Patrol superintendent and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation director must provide temporary staff and other help. This support backs funerals for officers who died in the line of duty while serving the state. The request must go to the advisory committee.
