2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you must pay a technology fee up to $10 when you register. You also pay $20 to the sheriff at each registration. Until July 1, 2028, the $20 is due in each county where you live, work, or go to school, and the tech fee is paid in your county of residence. Beginning July 1, 2028, you pay $20 plus the tech fee only in your county of residence. Registration is completed even if you do not pay. Full payment is due within 15 days after registration; not paying is a Class A misdemeanor. Missing two or more full payments within 20 days of the most recent registration is a severity level 9 felony. If you do not pay at registration, the agency may issue a notice to appear. If you pay within 20 days of registration, the charge must be dismissed. You may file a free court petition to be found indigent with a financial affidavit. A court indigency finding within the last three years excuses payment.
Beginning July 1, 2028, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation runs a single statewide registration system. Registering agencies must enter data in the KBI‑approved format, and agencies get real‑time relocation notices. All updates, photos, and prints must be entered within three business days. KBI sends updates to national systems within three business days and updates the state database and website. Correctional facilities must register people within three business days of custody and report custody and location changes. A state technology fund pays to build and maintain the system, and KBI covers system costs.
