Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Nurse anesthetists can manage anesthesia

Nurse anesthetists may manage anesthesia and pain care when a physician or dentist orders it. They can do pre- and post-anesthesia visits, help plan care, choose how to give anesthesia, give medicines during care, order tests, support life functions, and guide recovery. These duties must match their education and qualifications. They work as part of a physician- or dentist-directed team and may join chart and case reviews to improve quality. The law also repeals an older nurse anesthetist statute to align with these rules.

Nurse anesthetists barred from abortion

Nurse anesthetists may not perform or induce an abortion. They also may not prescribe, obtain, or give drugs for an abortion.

Nurse anesthetist prescribing with rules

Nurse anesthetists may prescribe durable medical equipment and prescribe, obtain, and give drugs that fit their training. They may not prescribe anesthetic agents except during their peri-anesthesia duties. For controlled substances, they must follow the uniform controlled substances act and register with the federal DEA. Every prescription must list the nurse anesthetist’s name, address, and phone number. They may not dispense drugs, but they can receive professional samples and give those samples to patients.
