The law bans accrediting agencies from punishing Kansas colleges for following state law. Federal law still controls when it requires an accreditation rule. Schools can sue an accrediting agency in a Kansas court. If an agency violates the ban, the school's governing board must notify the Legislature in writing within 30 days.
The law requires each college’s governing board to regularly review and update its accreditation policies. By December 31, 2025, boards must list eligible accreditors from the U.S. Department of Education’s database and update rules so the school can seek any appropriate one. The rules cover state universities, municipal universities, community colleges, and certain private nonprofit colleges based in Kansas with open enrollment. Kansas now uses the Education Department’s recognized‑accreditor list and repeals older statutes to match.
