The law requires the state long-term care ombudsman to provide dementia-care training to all regional and volunteer ombudsmen. Training covers laws, investigation skills, warning signs, person-centered care, communication, behavior supports and restraint alternatives, wandering and other safety risks, and how to connect families to local help and report abuse. This strengthens support for residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and their families. The act takes effect when it is published in the statute book.
Employees of the ombudsman office who complete the required training can be authorized to serve as ombudsmen and represent the office. The law also repeals the prior ombudsman statute and replaces it with updated rules, effective on publication in the statute book. This helps the office staff cases and deliver services statewide.
