In Shreveport, owners must demolish run-down, fire-damaged commercial buildings if they received insurance money for the fire damage. The city’s governing authority must find that the property threatens residents’ health and welfare. It must first consider reports or findings from code enforcement, firefighters, police, and other relevant public safety officials. Owners pay for demolition, while removing dangerous buildings helps protect residents. The requirement overrides conflicting laws and applies retroactively to January 1, 2023, and going forward. This law sets no demolition deadline.
