Beginning July 1, 2026, Louisiana insurers generally must give 60 days’ written notice before canceling or not renewing covered policies. Separate deadlines remain for unpaid premiums, including a 10-day rule; some commercial cancellations also retain a 10-day deadline. Homeowners’ cancellation and nonrenewal notices must explain the reason. If homeowners receive late nonrenewal notice, existing coverage continues until 60 days after notice. Premiums for that extra coverage are based on the prior year’s rate and the time covered. Existing protections against improper cancellation or nonrenewal remain, but the law creates no new grounds for lawsuits.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Louisiana commercial insurers must give 60 days’ written notice before expiration, up from 30 days. This covers rate increases, deductible changes, and cuts to coverage or coverage limits. Without timely notice, existing rates and coverage continue until notice is given or replacement coverage starts, whichever comes first. If the business does not renew, premiums for the extension are prorated using the lower current or prior-year rate. If it renews, the increase and other changes take effect the day after the previous expiration or anniversary date.
